For exceptional bravery and selfless devotion to duty during Mission AO Run. While his squad was engaged by enemy forces and suffering multiple casualties, PV2 Sapp repeatedly exposed himself to intense enemy fire to recover wounded and downed members of his squad. Despite the extreme danger, he moved into the engagement area on three separate occasions, including while under direct enemy fire, to assist his fellow soldiers. During the engagement, PV2 Sapp also employed the machine gun to provide effective suppressive fire while other members of the squad treated and assisted casualties. His actions directly reduced the danger to the remaining members of the squad and helped prevent the situation from becoming even more critical for the platoon. Had PV2 Sapp not repeatedly placed himself in harm’s way to recover and assist downed personnel while providing suppressive fire, the squad and platoon would have remained at significantly greater risk of additional casualties and loss of combat effectiveness. PV2 Sapp’s courage, initiative, and selfless actions reflect great credit upon himself and demonstrate the highest traditions of courage and service.
