2LT A.Byrd during Operation Crete called in a Danger Close Fire Mission. As the 1st Platoon and 2nd Platoon were in threat of being overran 2LT A.Byrd marked the most Western line of fire with a green smoke personally carried by himself, being the last man to leave OBJ Scimitar. 2LT A.Byrd threw himself into the line of fire drawing attention with the green smoke making sure that the left boundary of the Fire Mission was well received to prevent any friendly fire. His daring and bold move prevented Egyptian elements from pushing their advance and allowed for elements of 1st Platoon, 2nd Platoon and Embassy Personnel to safely evacuate and retreat in good order. 2LT A.Byrd courage, leadership, and selfless devotion to duty, reflect great credit upon himself, the 3rd Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
